Migrant in Malaysia
Between 2010 and 2017, the number of documented foreign workers in Malaysia increased from 1.7 million to 2.2 million, and as of the end of 2018, millions of migrant workers in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia toil in conditions that leave them vulnerable not only to Covid-19 (coronavirus) but also to the strict lockdowns imposed to stem the pandemic in host countries. With the Covid-19 pandemic bringing the world to a grinding halt, foreign workers have had to bear the brunt of the strict lockdowns imposed to curb the spread of the coronavirus. When Malaysia announced the nationwide Movement Control Order (MCO) on March 18, many of the country’s foreign workers faced uncertainty regarding the payment of wages and job security, as the sectors they worked in were badly hit.
